Here's a question I've been pondering for a day or so - at what stage are you no longer noob? Is it a set date post-rezzing or does it depend entirely on an individual's time and experience? Is noob-ness relative, with you being a noob around one group of people, but non-noob around another? Is noobness in the eye of the beholder?
Hardly important issues really. Just a label that doesn't really exist. I guess the reason for all this navel-gazing and philoSLophy is because I've been feeling a bit more settled in my SL life recently. A bit more non-noobie.
As I expressed earlier a big sign of settled-ness for me is getting IMs when I arrive inworld without me IMing first. People being pleased to see you and wanting to say hi. I guess of my current massive friend list (comprising all of ten people! - hehe) there are three who would do this. It's a start, eh? Perhaps unsurprisingly all three are either in or close to my timezone. I'm realising that being in most people's 'tomorrow' is a bigger deal than I'd first thought.
So yeah.... noobness. The reason for this post. To recap, /me is feeling less noobilicious. Or at least, I was. Last night I was given guided mystery tour of some of the less salubrious parts of SL. (Thank you. You know who you are!)There are some pretty 'differently-orientated' places out there. Parts of the tour, most of it in fact, were definitely an eye-opener. The whole trip reminded me that am a noob after all.
Perhaps in RL as well as SL.

I think noobness is relative to the time spent in-world and dediccation to learning. After my first three days, I was already post-noob and many thought I was an alt cause I had so much knowledge behind my BananaBrain.
ReplyDeleteAs for learning - there is always something to learn in SL. Always something new.
I dont think you're a noob anymore... not in sl anyways... hahaha
Hehe. I'm not a noob in RL either. I just wear blinkers.
ReplyDeleteI've told this story before: I met a girl when I was about 3 or 4 months old who said "You look pretty good for being a newb." I was so insulted! I'd been in SL for a looong time! (or so I thought). Ha!
ReplyDeleteIn all my nooby glory, I bravely ventured forth into the erm..."less salubrious" nooks and crannies of SL in my second and third weeks of SLife..
ReplyDeleteNobody ever told me I looked like a noob. Then again, I dedicated my first week in SL to my appearance. The only people who saw my initial efforts were my fellow noobs on Orientation Island and thereafter, the folks who followed me to Free Dove and The Gnubie Store.
My only regret is that I actually liked bling in the early days. OH THE HORROR.
The only way I suppose I could still be classifed as a noob is because I have an extremely short list of friends (by choice). I don't hang out at clubs (don't get me started on how much I ABHOR gesture spam. If I see/hear one more WOOT!, I may pull out my saber and slice and dice someone's prim boobs).
What makes me sad is that many of the places I loved exploring in my early days are now defunct. I suppose that has something to do with the whole Open Spaces debacle. :( I was such a geek I could wander every "nature" sim for hours..alone (*sheepishly admits to trying every poseball she came across*--what a wondrous invention).
